    Super Bowl XLII Preview

The legendary, undefeated, about to make history New England Patriots. How can you go against them? Nobody has been able to beat them so far, not even their Super Bowl opponent, the New York Giants. No one can stop their juggernaut offense. The name Tom Brady is synonymous with winner. The 70’s had Bradshaw, the 80’s Montana and now Tom Brady is about to join their ranks. He has had arguably the greatest season ever by a quarterback. Its like going against Michael Jordan, you would have to be nuts. Then of course theres, Moss, the solid running game, the household name defense and a guy named Belicheck.

But then how can you go against the team of destiny, the New York Giants. They were supposed to lose the first round, as a matter of fact they weren’t even supposed to be in the playoffs. No one beats a # 1 NFC seed, but they did. No one wins at Lambeau in January, but they did. Eli Manning cant play 3 games in a row like that, but he did. Its like when the Beatles released Sgt Peppers. Ringo can’t write songs like that, but he did.

So what do we do??? We go back to the numbers like always. We have Giants as 11 point dogs and the total is 53 which starts us out at New England 32 New York 21. Well first of all the Giants can and will pound the running game. You can run the ball on New England. However New England has been very stingy in the red zone. But then again the Giants have been very good. So the question is not, will the Giants get to the red zone because I am certain they will. It’s a matter of, will they score touchdowns and I think they will for a number of reasons. First they have a freight train running back who has been running downhill lately. Second Plaxico Burress is a taylor made goal line pattern wide receiver. Third the Giants are undeniably playing their best football at any point this year and have the confidence that goes with it. Fourth the Giants believe, no they know they can beat the Patriots and finally, we all saw the game last week, the Giants don’t want to be kicking field goals. So I think they will make their 21.

However that’s about where I figure New England as well for a couple reasons. One they absolutely are not playing at their highest level and have not been since that strange night against Baltimore. Second San Diego showed that a good defense can definitly slow the New England offense down and the Giants have a good one. Third the ground and pound game the Giants offense will utilize will shorten the game and keep Brady and company off the field.

So I have it at 21 – 21, but and this is a huge but, remember the Super Bowl is typically 10-15 plays longer than an average game. So what I am really saying is that if this was a regular season game I see it going into overtime tied at 21, but it’s the Super Bowl so we still have 10-15 plays to run yet. There are only 2 scenarios, either New England has the ball at this point, or the Giants do. So lets start with New England

If New England has the ball, they score, no two ways about it. I am not going to go on again about undefeated, NFL royalty, the team of history etc. Now the Giants are not built for quick scores and their kicking game is struggling. It doesn’t look good for the G-men.

However if the Giants have the ball, it’s the best situation possible for the team of destiny. Pound the running game, throw when you need to, Mr Burress will fired up and ready. Chew up those plays and kick your field goal with no time left for the Patriot juggernaut to return fire.

So which one will it be? The team of history or the team of destiny? Well, like New England, destiny is also undefeated and will be for all time, that’s why they call it destiny. Much like the Patriots did to the Rams what seems like eons ago, the Giants have the ball at the point we talked about. They pound it down the field on the tiring New England defense, and this time they don’t need 3 tries to kick a game winning field goal. New York Giants 24 New England Patriots 21.
